Trump Plans Meeting with Colombian President Amid Tensions

President Trump announced he would be meeting with Colombian President Gustavo Petro following what he described as a “positive call” between the two leaders. This comes after a period of tension, particularly concerning the detention of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.

During their phone conversation on Wednesday, the dialogue shifted from confrontational to more amicable, leading to an invitation from the White House. Trump shared details about the call on Truth Social, mentioning that Petro filled him in on issues regarding drug trafficking and other disagreements.

“I had the great honor of speaking with Colombian President Gustavo Petro,” Trump relayed, appreciating the tone of the conversation and expressing eagerness to meet him soon.

Before the direct meeting, Trump indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would engage with Colombia’s foreign minister at the White House, setting the stage for further discussions.

This confirmation followed a report from NewsNation’s Kelly Meyer, stating that the conversation between Trump and Petro was “good and positive.”

Interestingly, this announcement comes in the wake of Trump hinting that Petro might have links to Colombia’s drug cartels and could be the next target for U.S. action after the military operation that captured Maduro.

Amid growing tensions following Maduro’s arrest, Trump remarked, “Colombia is also very sick. It’s run by a sick man who likes to make cocaine and sell it to the United States. He won’t last very long,” raising eyebrows and concerns.

On the other hand, Petro has been vocal against U.S. military operations, warning recently that Colombia is prepared to “take up arms” if the U.S. were to attack.

Currently, Colombia is open to diplomatic discussions, with Petro’s office confirming a forthcoming meeting with Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodríguez. This meeting aims to promote peace and reconciliation in Venezuela amidst ongoing political crises.

Petro’s office issued a statement regarding the planned official visit to the Casa de Nariño, intending to discuss these pressing issues.

It’s worth noting that Trump had previously issued a stern warning to Rodríguez, hinting at severe consequences if U.S. demands regarding security and oil were not met.
