Market Update: A Calm Before Earnings Season

On the night of January 6, 2026, stock futures showed a gentle decline as investors prepared for what many believe could be a pivotal week for the market.

The futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped by 40 points, while both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures fell by 0.1%.

Despite this, the market has been hitting new record highs lately. Just last Friday, both the S&P 500 and Dow 30 closed at record levels, marking the end of a strong week for major indices. For the week, the S&P 500 rose more than 1%, with the Dow increasing by 2.3% and the Nasdaq rising 1.9%.

As earnings season approaches, traders are gearing up for reports from major banks on Wall Street. Noteworthy releases from JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs are expected in the coming days. These results will offer fresh insights into consumer spending and trading activities, which many investors find crucial.

Another focal point this week will be the inflation data set to be released on Tuesday. Given the recent December jobs report, which indicated a cooling yet resilient labor market, this data is more important than ever. The report confirmed that the Federal Reserve is likely to maintain interest rates for the time being, even with signs of slowing economic momentum.

Lara Castleton, who heads U.S. portfolio construction and strategy at Janus Henderson Investors, mentioned, “While the risk-on sentiment across portfolios remains intact for now, this data effectively eliminates the possibility of a Fed rate cut in January.”

Meanwhile, geopolitical risks are also capturing attention. Reports indicate that President Trump is considering intervention options in Iran. Additionally, he warned that no Venezuelan oil or money would be sent to Cuba unless an agreement is reached with Washington. On another front, he threatened action regarding Greenland, emphasizing the U.S. interest in acquiring Danish territory.
