What Christians Should Understand About Trump's Plans for Venezuela

US Military Mission in Venezuela

In a special report, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Cain shared that Operation Absolute Resolve aimed to arrest two indicted individuals, Nicolás and Syria Maduro, in Caracas, Venezuela.

The operation unfolded during the first weekend of January, resulting in Maduro’s capture and a swift exit from the country in under three hours.

Rubio States US is Fighting Drug Lords

Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the United States is not engaged in warfare with Venezuela itself but rather with “drug lords.” In a recent interview, he explained, “We are enforcing American law regarding oil sanctions,” detailing how the U.S. pursues legal action to seize oil-laden ships. He emphasized ongoing efforts against drug shipments entering the U.S., highlighting that the leaders of these cartels, including Maduro, are facing U.S. law enforcement.

When questioned about the current leadership in Venezuela, Rubio pointed out that the U.S. seeks changes that favor its interests and aims to foster regional stability. He remarked, “We cannot tolerate a country in our hemisphere that serves as a hub for adversaries’ activities…” He emphasized that these situations pose direct threats to the U.S. and asserted that the country would leverage all necessary resources to safeguard its security.

Rubio also mentioned that the U.S. Coast Guard would play a role in ensuring sanctions are enforced effectively.

Trump Confirms No War with Venezuela

Reports suggest that the Trump administration is collaborating with Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who assumed leadership following Maduro’s capture. President Trump stated that there won’t be elections in Venezuela for a while, possibly up to 18 months, although he expressed hope for an earlier resolution.

He remarked, “First we have to rebuild our country. Elections can’t happen if people can’t vote.” Trump reaffirmed that the U.S. isn’t at war with Venezuela, but rather with those involved in drug trafficking, emphasizing the dangers these individuals pose to U.S. society.

He indicated that Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and Vice President J.D. Vance would assist Rodriguez in the country’s reconstruction efforts.

A recent poll indicated that 48% of likely U.S. voters approve of seizing Venezuelan oil tankers, 40% disapprove, and 12% are undecided.

Christian Leaders Weigh In

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council recently urged Christians to pray for Venezuela, especially for its Christian population. He noted that while nearly 30% of Venezuelans identify as evangelical Christians, many have faced oppression and restrictions in practicing their faith.

“The future remains uncertain,” Perkins commented, suggesting that recent events could either lead to increased religious freedom or new challenges. He called for prayers for wisdom and guidance for the Trump administration and for global leaders to pursue peace.

Since 2014, many Venezuelans have sought refuge in southern Florida, celebrating Maduro’s capture with public displays of joy. Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski noted that many refugees are anxious about returning to Venezuela, citing the need for significant political and social changes.

Wenski pointed out the historical tensions between the government and the Catholic Church, stating that the church has often been a courageous voice amid adversity. He urged the church to advocate for democracy while also promoting patience and reconciliation among the divided factions in Venezuela.
