Tensions Rise Between Trump Administration and the Fed
Recent tensions have escalated between the Trump administration and the Federal Reserve. According to Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, the Justice Department has issued a grand jury subpoena to the Fed.
In a video shared on the Federal Reserve’s official account, Powell explained that the Justice Department was “threatening criminal charges” related to his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last June.
Powell emphasized that the testimony was partly about a long-term project to renovate the historic Federal Reserve Office Building and remarked, “That’s what cost overruns are all about.”
Despite Trump’s repeated calls for rate cuts, Powell remained firm, referring to them as “presidential preferences.” He stated, “This is a question about whether the Fed can continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions or whether monetary policy will instead be guided by political pressure and intimidation.”
Powell noted that he has served at the Federal Reserve during both Republican and Democratic administrations, maintaining that he has executed his duties without political bias. “Public service sometimes requires us to remain resolute in the face of threats. I will continue to perform my job with integrity and a commitment to serve the American people,” he asserted.
The subpoena was officially delivered last Friday.
During the Senate testimony in June, Powell was questioned about the renovation costs approximately 36 minutes into the session. He acknowledged the seriousness of their role as stewards of public funds but admitted that “cost overruns are the reality.”
Additionally, Powell refuted several media claims, which included a “special elevator,” new marble installations, and more. In a notable incident, President Trump confronted Powell at a construction site in late July, expressing concern about the cost overruns. Powell stated he was “not aware” of the new figures Trump presented.
Just days prior, Representative Anna Paulina Luna had suggested referring Powell to the Justice Department. On Sunday evening, she reiterated her accusations against him in light of the subpoena, stating, “It’s good to see my criminal referral working in real time. You can’t lie to Congress. That’s called perjury.”
As of now, no criminal charges have been filed against Powell. The Justice Department has not commented on the matter.
