Rangers squander early advantage in disappointing defeat to Kraken

Rangers’ Struggles Continue After Loss to Seattle

On Monday, the Rangers faced a crucial moment. How would they respond to Saturday’s tough loss against Boston, where they were the first team this season to give up 10 points in a game?

Essentially, the question was whether they would crumble again, as they have so often this season.

The result, a 4-2 defeat to Seattle at Madison Square Garden, somehow felt even more disheartening. This marked their fourth consecutive loss, a new low for the season. It was especially painful because the Rangers had taken an early 2-0 lead, scoring two goals just five minutes into the match.

Yet, as has been the pattern, they quickly relinquished that advantage. During the second period, Seattle scored twice, and Shane Wright netted the go-ahead goal at 12:02 in the third, contributing to the Rangers suffering their seventh loss in eight games.

The Rangers aimed to recover from their earlier defeat, but luck was not on their side. A costly penalty by JT Miller occurred just 36 seconds into the match, putting them at a disadvantage.

However, things turned around momentarily when Mika Zibanejad managed to score at 3:08 of the first period, and Sam Carrick followed up with another goal, making it 2-0 barely into the game. At that point, it looked like a rare, solid victory was on the horizon.

But, of course, being the Rangers, trouble was lurking. Eeli Tolvanen capitalized on a defensive lapse and struck to make it 2-1 early in the second. Before long, Jordan Hebert’s shot leveled the game at 2-2.

Things changed again when Wright scored after a rebound, shifting the momentum entirely. With the trade deadline approaching and the Olympic break around the corner, the crowd began chanting “Fire Drury,” expressing frustration with general manager Chris Drury as the team continued to falter in the standings.

This loss followed an already demoralizing game where the Rangers allowed 10 goals, making it increasingly difficult to envision a turnaround, especially as they had been talking about rebuilding earlier.

“It’s tough to deal with feelings of disappointment and anger after the last game,” Braden Schneider shared post-skate. “We’ve all been pretty frustrated. We need to channel that anger into the next game.”

Mike Sullivan echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of playing with passion. “It’s about playing with purpose,” he emphasized. “We need to be aggressive while maintaining strong positional play and focus.”

For a while, the team managed to stay on track, but once again, things unraveled.
