Target encounters demonstrations following the detention of US citizen workers by ICE at a Minnesota location.

Target is facing scrutiny from activists and demonstrators in Minnesota following the detention of two employees by ICE agents at one of its stores.

The incident occurred on January 8 in Litchfield, where federal immigration officials apprehended the workers. Witnesses reported that the situation began in the parking lot and escalated towards the store’s entrance.

One of the employees shouted, “I’m literally an American citizen!” as he was led away by agents. The Wall Street Journal highlighted this dramatic moment.

Reports indicate that Jonathan Aguilar Garcia and Cristian Miranda Romano were stopped while on a driving mission. U.S. Border Patrol agents, under a senior commander, without a warrant, entered the store.

Minnesota Congressman Michael Howard stated that the agents entered without any legal basis. Witnesses and family members described the incident as racial profiling.

The Department of Homeland Security later announced via social media that one person had been arrested for allegedly assaulting a federal officer, a claim denied by the workers’ families and local officials.

Both employees were eventually released. One was found injured and distressed in a Walmart parking lot nearby, while the other was taken to a detention center briefly before being freed.

Following the incident, protests erupted outside the Litchfield Target, with demonstrators urging the retailer to safeguard employees and patrons from actions by federal immigration agents in their stores.

During the demonstration, local residents and faith groups rallied, chanting and confronting store management. Organizers urged Target to provide training on how employees should deal with immigration officials, particularly emphasizing the need for a signed warrant for entry into private areas of the store.

Activists also requested that Target publicly oppose immigration enforcement within its premises, arguing that the company’s silence contributes to growing tension in the community. Ben Whalen, a former city councilman in Litchfield, remarked on the oddity of the corporation’s lack of response during such a critical time.

Whalen noted that organizers met with the store’s manager to discuss clearer policies and enhanced protections for the staff.

The federal immigration presence in Minnesota has surged recently, with agents conducting operations in neighborhoods, retail areas, and large stores. Officials reported that this crackdown has led to the apprehension of hundreds of individuals, including many with serious criminal backgrounds, which has created anxiety among residents.

The situation escalated notably after the shooting of 37-year-old American citizen Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7, resulting in widespread protests and public outrage directed at federal authorities.

Demonstrators have organized rallies outside government buildings and other federal targets, with local leaders, including Mayor Jacob Frey, calling for ICE to withdraw from the city as investigations into the shooting continue amidst growing frustration with the federal government’s approach.

In an initial sweep, federal agents reportedly arrested around 300 individuals in just two days within the Minneapolis region, with ten of them identified as suspected murderers or violent offenders.

This immigration enforcement is being witnessed at other major retailers across Minnesota as well, with reports of detentions occurring in Walmart stores and parking areas in the Twin Cities.

Footage online shows store employees confronting individuals within their locations, which are being utilized as bases during operations.

Home Depot parking lots are also frequent enforcement sites, as day laborers, many of whom are immigrants, often gather there for temporary work opportunities.

Activists have requested intervention from Home Depot to halt such raids, but the company has stated that federal agents are permitted to operate in publicly accessible areas and that they do not collaborate with ICE or CBP.

Inquiries have been made to both Walmart and Home Depot for their responses regarding these incidents.
