Mark Brnovich, Former Arizona Attorney General, Passes Away at 59

Mark Brnovich, the former Republican Attorney General of Arizona, has died at the age of 59, as confirmed by a family statement that was shared with several news organizations.

Having first been elected in 2014, Brnovich served as Arizona’s 26th attorney general from 2015 until 2023. His family shared the news of his passing with ABC15, noting, “The Brnovich family announces the passing of Mark Brnovich with deep sadness. Best known as Arizona’s 26th Attorney General, state and federal prosecutor, and champion of justice, he will forever be remembered and cherished by us as a beloved father, husband, son, and brother. We mourn this loss and are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support from so many wonderful people across our state and nation.”

The statement also requested privacy during this difficult time and mentioned that memorial arrangements would be shared publicly once they are finalized.

Brnovich’s legal journey began in the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office from 1992 to 1998, where he handled numerous high-profile cases in the Gang/Recidivism Unit. According to his biography on the Federalist Society’s website, he later worked as an Assistant Attorney General in Arizona’s Attorney General’s Office from 1998 to 2003, focusing on gambling law.

His professional background includes roles as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, Pro Tem Judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court, and positions with the Goldwater Institute and the Arizona Gaming Authority.

In 2022, Brnovich ran for the state Senate but was defeated in the primary by Blake Masters.

In the wake of his death, various individuals, including current Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays, expressed gratitude for Brnovich’s service and extended their condolences to his family. Mays stated, “I’m sad to hear about the sudden passing of former Attorney General Mark Brnovich. My deepest condolences to his wife Susan and all their family during this difficult time. He dedicated many years to Arizona public service, including two terms as Attorney General.”

As of now, the cause of Brnovich’s death remains unconfirmed.
