Release of Americans Detained in Venezuela
On Tuesday, the Trump administration confirmed that a number of Americans held in Venezuela have been freed.
The State Department issued a statement saying, “We welcome the release of Americans detained in Venezuela. This is an important step in the right direction by the interim authorities.” However, they didn’t specify how many individuals were released.
Sources, who wished to remain anonymous to discuss sensitive details, mentioned that four Americans were released collectively on Tuesday, while another was released quietly a day earlier.
This release follows a significant event where U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a surprising nighttime operation earlier this month.
Jorge Rodríguez, the Speaker of the Venezuelan National Assembly, indicated last week that a “significant number” of Venezuelans and foreign prisoners would be released as part of a move toward “calling for peace” after the military operation that removed Maduro from power.
As of Tuesday evening, Foro Penal, a Venezuelan human rights organization, verified that 56 political prisoners had been released. They expressed concern over the government’s lack of transparency in the process.
The government countered this claim, asserting that the actual number of those released was around 400, although they did not provide any details about the releases, including the duration of imprisonment or the identities of those freed. This lack of information complicates the verification of whether these individuals were held for political reasons or not.
There have been sporadic moments of exchange between Washington and Caracas, mainly in the context of prisoner swaps, as their relationship has historically been strained.
Back in July, Venezuela released ten U.S. citizens and permanent residents, in exchange for returning numerous migrants who had been deported to El Salvador as part of earlier immigration policies under the previous administration.
Bloomberg News was first to report on the recent releases.
