The U.S. Secret Service has put an employee, who was part of Vice President J.D. Vance’s protection detail, on administrative leave. This decision follows allegations that the agent leaked sensitive national security information to an undercover female journalist.
As reported by investigative journalist James O’Keefe, it appears that Secret Service agent Thomas Escott shared several details related to Vance’s security arrangements. Additionally, images surfaced that disclose the transportation methods for the vice president.
O’Keefe described the situation as concerning and mentioned that this incident came on the heels of an attempted break-in at Vance’s residence in Cincinnati. He expressed hope that bringing this incident to light will bolster security measures and avert potential risks in the government.
The article suggests that Escott, who identifies as a supporter of Biden, provided various sensitive information to reporters, including:
- Real-time location of the Vice President.
- Insights into Vance’s upcoming travel plans.
- Information about his proximity to Vance during his security detail.
- Shifts of security personnel.
- Photographs with location data taken while on duty.
- Details on how the vice president’s vehicle is secured for international trips.
In a video, Escott mentioned he became a citizen only in 2018 and criticized the previous administration’s immigration policies, stating that certain tactics should not be employed.
O’Keefe’s team reportedly collaborated with the Secret Service and redacted sensitive operational details at their request before publishing the video.
Vance’s office has been contacted for a response regarding the situation.
Matthew Quinn, Deputy Director of the Secret Service, confirmed in a statement to O’Keefe that an investigation is ongoing. He added that the individuals involved are on administrative leave, with their access to agency systems suspended.
The agency is now mandating that all employees undergo retraining on counterespionage to enhance awareness of threats posed by individuals who may attempt to exploit staff for sensitive information.
Quinn noted that, over the past few months, personnel from government agencies have been specifically targeted and manipulated by citizen media who disguise themselves to extract confidential information. He mentioned this is the second incident within the year involving these deceptive approaches.
“When someone doesn’t meet expectations, it places additional stress on colleagues who must work to regain the trust we all strive to uphold,” Quinn remarked.
Andrew Corbett, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, highlighted the seriousness of O’Keefe’s revelations, calling it one of the most unsettling videos he has seen recently. He emphasized that those in charge of safeguarding the president and vice president must be prioritized.
Corbett expressed that the risk of Secret Service members revealing classified information and endangering lives is a significant national security concern.
Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, commented that the Secret Service appears to be in a precarious state.
