Controversy Surrounds ICE Operations
On Wednesday, Rep. Angie Craig, a Democrat from Minnesota, drew parallels between the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and historical footage from Germany in the 1930s. She also broached the idea of possibly defunding the agency.
This discussion comes on the heels of significant unrest in Minnesota following the shooting of a woman by ICE agents in Minneapolis last week. During an appearance on “The Ana Cabrera Report,” Craig was asked how Democrats could counter what she termed as the Trump administration’s harsh immigration policies.
When prompted about potential strategies, Craig firmly stated, “It’s outrageous that I would give a penny to Trump and Kristi Noem’s ICE. I wouldn’t support those terrorizing the people in Minnesota.” She emphasized the need for legislative measures to restrict ICE agents’ access to schools and churches.
Ms. Cabrera pressed further, inquiring if Craig supported the idea of shutting down the government over ICE funding. Craig responded thoughtfully, noting, “I’m not in the leadership room, but I can’t help but see many similarities to the images from Germany in the 1930s. We need to take a stand against this lawless regime, and nothing is off the table right now.”
In reaction to Craig’s remarks, White House press secretary Abigail Jackson labeled them as “dangerous and untrue slander.” She noted a staggering 1,300% increase in assaults against ICE agents, attributing this surge to what she described as harmful accusations from Democrats. Jackson asserted that ICE agents perform their duties with professionalism and act heroically to safeguard American communities.
As a January 30 deadline approaches for avoiding a partial government shutdown, some progressive Democrats are suggesting using this funding opportunity to undermine ICE operations.
Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin from Maryland stated, “We should use every tool at our disposal to do that, including the appropriations process.” Additionally, there are growing calls among Democratic lawmakers for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following the incident in Minnesota.
