Fatal Stabbing Incident on Chicago Train

Prosecutors have revealed a disturbing incident in which a man recorded himself fatally stabbing a sleeping passenger on a Chicago Transit Authority train. Just two months earlier, another horrific act occurred when 26-year-old Bethany McGee was set on fire by a man with a lengthy criminal history.

According to court records, Demetrius Thurman, 40, approached 37-year-old Dominique Pollion from behind while he was asleep on a Blue Line train. Holding a cell phone and a knife, Thurman allegedly stabbed Pollion in the chest and abdomen around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday. Reports say Pollion awoke screaming and tried to escape Thurman, who continued to pursue her while filming the scene.

After changing train cars, Thurman fled when the train arrived at Clark/Lake Station. A passenger alerted security about Pollion’s condition, but due to Thurman’s multiple layers of clothing, it wasn’t immediately apparent that he had been attacked.

During the first trial on Tuesday, prosecutors argued that Thurman, while recording the scene, commented, “Someone’s been attacked,” before leaving the station. Pollion was swiftly taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The attack was captured on surveillance footage, and Thurman was identified through an Illinois facial recognition program. He was arrested the following day while still wearing the same clothes he had on during the incident. Police later searched his phone and discovered chilling footage from his perspective of the stabbing.

This incident echoed a previous alarming attack on the same train line. In November, Bethany McGee was reportedly set on fire by serial offender Lawrence Reed, who has faced arrest 72 times. In a desperate attempt to escape, she managed to jump off the train at the Clark/Lake station, although she sustained severe burns over a significant portion of her body and was hospitalized in critical condition.

Reed allegedly taunted emergency responders saying “Live and burn, bitch” upon his arrest, and now faces federal terrorism charges that could lead to life in prison.

Thurman, whose lawyer has indicated he struggles with mental health issues, is charged with first-degree murder and is currently held without bail at Cook County Jail. He is set to appear in court again on February 3.

Safety concerns continue to loom over Chicago’s public transit. According to reports, the Trump administration has given the CTA until mid-March to address safety issues or risk losing $50 million in federal support. In response, the CTA pledged to increase the presence of police and security personnel on train and bus lines.
