Incident Involving Illegal Immigrant Results in Fatal Accident

In 2024, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended an undocumented immigrant in Minnesota after he ran a stop sign, leading to a tragic accident while he was watching an English-learning video on his iPad.

Georgiy Gabiev, a Russian national who entered the U.S. illegally in 2022, was responsible for the death of truck driver Tim Tarnowski on March 5, 2024, on a rural road in Chippewa County. Gabiev had been released by the current administration prior to the incident.

He pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter but was sentenced to just 120 days in prison. During questioning, Gabiev mentioned he was “listening to a program that taught me how to speak English” on his iPad when the collision occurred.

On June 9, ICE arrested Gabiev in Brooklyn and is now preparing to deport him.

“Tim will never be brought back, but Gabiev’s arrest brings us the justice we deserve,” expressed Tammy Tarnowski, the widow of the deceased. She was personally notified of the arrest by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

She added, “Our family can now find closure and begin the healing necessary to move forward. Hopefully, this situation sheds light on the experiences of families like ours.” Gabiev argued that, at the time of the crash, “he was not looking at the iPad while driving.” However, there were implications that he should not have been in the U.S. or driving at all.

Critics, including a spokesman for a group advocating for families affected by similar tragedies, pointed out that the immigration policies of the current administration could have prevented this incident, suggesting that the accident might not have occurred if stricter measures were in place. They vowed to continue their fight for justice.
