Bilt Introduces 3 New Cards That Reward Housing Expenses, But It’s Complicated

Bilt Expands to Homeowners with New Credit Cards

Bilt, initially a favorite among renters, is now catering to homeowners too.

The company is set to launch its new credit cards—the built blue card, built obsidian card, and built palladium card—available for pre-order starting January 14, 2026. These new cards aim to help users earn rewards not just on rent, but also on mortgage payments, all without incurring any fees.

Users can utilize their new cards to pay rent and mortgages. However, if they want to earn rewards on these payments, a 3% processing fee will apply. Thankfully, they can utilize a new rewards currency called Bilt Cash to offset that fee. Bilt Cash can be earned on regular purchases alongside Bilt Points, the original currency of the program, though it’s worth noting that Bilt Cash cannot be accumulated from housing expenses.

Sounds a bit confusing? It kind of is. Let’s break it down.

Features and Points of the New Bilt Cards

The new Bilt cards will replace the previous Bilt World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card, which was issued by Wells Fargo and is now discontinued. Unlike the $0 annual fee of the old card, two of the new cards come with annual fees. However, the new offerings will be issued and serviced by Column NA Bank and feature a welcome bonus. Existing customers upgrading from the old cards will also receive benefits.

Beginning January 14, 2026, cardholders will be able to pick from one of the three cards via the Bilt app or website. If approved by January 30, 2026, customers can expect their cards delivered by February 6, 2026, with full usage starting on February 7, 2026.

With these changes, there are some important benefits when it comes to paying rent or mortgages, as well as compensation for other expenses.

Interest Rates

The current annual interest rate for the new cards will range from 26.74% to 34.74%, variable.

Important Points to Keep in Mind

  • No limit exists on points you can earn for rent or mortgage payments.
  • All personal mortgages qualify for points, independent of lender.
  • Rent or mortgage payments won’t count against your Bilt card credit limit.
  • Five authorized users can be added per Bilt Credit Card.
  • Unlike previous versions, the new Bilt card doesn’t require a minimum number of transactions to earn rewards, but spending on non-housing expenses is necessary to earn Bilt Cash.

How Bilt Cash Works

Bilt Cash essentially allows you to earn rewards on housing payments without facing a 3% transaction fee. This new design brings complexity compared to the earlier model, where fees weren’t an issue. Bilt Cash accrued from non-housing purchases can be redeemed for various options like fitness classes or hotel bookings. However, it cannot be transferred and it’s still valued at a dollar for covering transaction fees of 3% on housing payments.

For example, with a $2,000 mortgage payment, paying using a Bilt credit card would require $60 in Bilt Cash to earn all 2,000 Bilt points. If you lack enough Bilt Cash, you might need to cover the shortfall with cash. It’s crucial to point out that while you can make housing payments without incurring fees, you won’t earn rewards unless you have Bilt Cash.

Final Thoughts on Bilt Cards

The new Bilt credit card can be valuable, especially with Bilt Cash. However, the dual-reward structure may not be appealing to everyone. If your mortgage is $2,000, you can easily earn enough Bilt Cash through other purchases, but with a higher payment, like $5,000, it becomes trickier. You might find yourself needing to spend a significant amount on non-housing expenses to earn rewards. Ultimately, if the complexity feels overwhelming, you don’t have to upgrade from the old Bilt World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card, which expires on February 7, 2026.

Decide wisely, and only upgrade if it makes sense for you. Otherwise, you can opt for a less complicated route with the new offerings, ensuring it aligns with your spending habits and financial goals.
