Madonna Voices Support for Iranian Protesters on Instagram
Pop icon Madonna took to Instagram on Friday to express her solidarity with the people of Iran as they protest against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
“As we enter the Year of the Fire Horse, it feels so relevant. I think about my time in Morocco during the holidays and all the brave individuals in Iran who are fighting for a necessary revolution, willing to sacrifice everything for their beliefs,” said the 67-year-old artist.
Her remarks come amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran, as Iranians push back against Khamenei’s oppressive regime. The protests are largely fueled by an escalating economic crisis, which has devastated the value of Iran’s currency, the rial.
The government has responded with severe crackdowns, and reports estimate that thousands of protest-related deaths have occurred. According to the U.S.-based Human Rights Defenders News Agency, 1,847 deceased were protesters, while other estimates suggest that over 3,000 have died in total.
In the face of these challenges, discussions about potential military action from the Trump administration to protect civilians have arisen. However, it’s unclear if any action will be taken immediately as President Trump continues to assess the situation.
Madonna elaborated on her reflections, admitting that she often takes her own freedoms for granted. “We often overlook the ability to travel, dress as we wish, or express ourselves without fear of punishment or worse. Iranian women lack these freedoms, and I stand with them. While I can’t fully grasp their suffering, my prayers are with them.” She concluded her message with a rallying cry: “Now is the time. Stay strong! I support Iran. Let their voice be heard.”
