Ashton Kutcher on Hollywood and Beauty Standards

NEW YORK, NY – Amid the ongoing discussion about beauty ideals, Ashton Kutcher argues that Hollywood isn’t quite the bad guy it’s often made out to be.

In comments made prior to the launch of his new FX thriller “The Beauty,” Kutcher suggested that the notion of perfection enforced by the film industry is somewhat overstated. “What’s interesting is that everyone… is targeting Hollywood,” he shared during the New York premiere.

Kutcher dismissed claims that Hollywood imposes unrealistic beauty standards on actors and viewers alike. He pointed out that television and movies today showcase a diverse range of characters in terms of age, body shapes, and appearances. “When you go to watch TV today or watch a movie, you see all kinds of people, all kinds of looks,” he noted, highlighting that Hollywood now mirrors real life more closely.

“Hollywood is always trying to reflect back on humanity what humanity reflects back on humanity,” Kutcher stated, emphasizing that leading roles now encompass a broader array of individuals rather than just the traditionally idealized forms.

Kutcher believes that the expectations around beauty are shaped by societal influences, not merely dictated by studios. “So I don’t think it’s something Hollywood has imposed. I think it’s something the world has imposed,” he explained, suggesting that these ideas come from our everyday experiences.

FX’s “The Beauty” addresses these themes with a darker tone, focusing on society’s obsession with physical perfection. In this new series, a sexually transmitted virus gives ordinary individuals extraordinary looks, leading to some disturbing consequences.

Kutcher portrays The Corporation, a mysterious billionaire responsible for developing a miracle drug amid a global crisis. His co-star, Evan Peters, who plays FBI agent Cooper Madsen, mentioned that creator Ryan Murphy encapsulates a significant message in his work: what makes you unique is what genuinely makes you beautiful. “I hope people take that message,” Peters remarked.

The cast also features Rebecca Hall, Anthony Ramos, Jeremy Pope, and guest stars including Bella Hadid, Isabella Rossellini, Ben Platt, and Jessica Alexander.

FX’s “The Beauty” is set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on January 21, 2026.
