AFCON 2025 Final: Disputed decision and fan fights involving Senegal and Morocco

Controversy Marks African Cup of Nations Final

This controversial call and the missed penalty shot made waves across 54 countries.

On Sunday night, Senegal faced hosts Morocco in the much-anticipated final of the 2025 African Cup of Nations, pitting the tournament’s top teams against each other.

The match, characterized as a defensive chess game, ended with no goals during regular time, pushing it into overtime.

Things got intense when Senegalese midfielder Ismaila Sarr attempted to score in the 91st minute, but referee Jean-Jacques N’Dala disallowed the goal. Instead, Senegal’s Abdoulaye Sek was penalized for a foul on PSG’s Achraf Hakimi.

This crucial decision is one that, perhaps, the referee will come to regret.

As extra time wound down, Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz was brought down, pleading for a penalty, but the video assistant referee (VAR) upheld the on-field decision.

Then, in a shocking turn, Senegal’s head coach Pape Thiau, frustrated by the earlier decision, left the field abruptly.

The team attempted to follow him to the locker room, but chaos ensued as Senegalese fans rushed onto the pitch, leading to altercations and objects being thrown.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino condemned the behavior of both players and supporters in a social media statement.

After a lengthy delay lasting around 17 minutes, play resumed, but Morocco took advantage of the situation to secure their first AFCON title since 1976.

In front of 66,000 fans at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Diaz missed a penalty attempt after executing a “panenka” style kick, much to the dismay of Moroccan supporters.

Senegal’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, read the attempt well and managed to stop it, but the game continued. Finally, in the third minute of extra time, Papa Gueye scored with a precise left-footed shot, bringing Senegal up 1-0, and they managed to hold onto the lead for the win.

However, despite their victory, Thiau, the players, and the fans might face significant backlash.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released a statement condemning unsportsmanlike behavior, particularly toward referees and match organizers.

Infantino reiterated that such scenes are unacceptable and should never be repeated, emphasizing a need for decorum in football.

This incident casts a shadow not only on Senegal but also on Morocco, which is set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

With five of the six venues used for this year’s AFCON set for renovations by then, one can only hope that enhanced security measures will be implemented.
