Fernando Mendoza responds to the national championship victory

Fernando Mendoza played a pivotal role in helping the Indiana Hoosiers secure a national championship, making a crucial play in front of his family and friends during the peak of his college career.

On a 4th and 5 play, Mendoza took the snap and charged through Miami Hurricanes defenders. He managed to dive from the 2-yard line, extending the ball over the goal line, although he was hit just as it landed in the end zone.

With 6:32 remaining, Indiana led 24-14, eventually winning the game 27-21. After the match, Mendoza expressed his pride in the team to ESPN’s Holly Rowe, stating, “That’s what our team is about. We’re always going to fight for everything, and I want to give all the glory and thanks to God. Our offense executed perfectly, and we aimed for a common goal. I want the Indiana Hoosier synergy to score and give our team a chance to win.”

Mendoza emphasized his commitment to the team, saying, “I had to take to the air. I’d do anything for the team, no matter what they ask of me. Whether they need me to push from the front or the back, I’m all in. It’s this bond that makes the national championships meaningful.”

Despite taking a blow to the face in the first quarter, Mendoza finished strong, completing 16 of 27 passes for 186 yards along with a rushing touchdown. His coach, Curt Cignetti, praised his resilience, saying, “He got hit hard and didn’t have time, but he kept bouncing back. He’s a great competitor; without his performance, this victory wouldn’t have been possible.”

Indiana University made history as the first college football team to finish a season 16-0 since Yale did so back in 1894.
