Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Speak Out Against Cancel Culture
Actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck recently expressed their concerns regarding cancel culture, which they argue can lead to the irreversible ruin of certain individuals’ lives.
During a conversation with well-known podcaster Joe Rogan while promoting their Netflix film, The Rip, the duo shared their candid thoughts. Damon remarked, “I think some of those guys would have preferred to serve a short prison sentence and then move on, asking, ‘Okay, I’ve paid my debt. Can we just start fresh now?’ But that sort of public shaming—it just never seems to end.”
He pointed out that society’s refusal to forgive past mistakes forces individuals to “carry that burden until their dying day.” Affleck supported this sentiment, noting that there’s a “dark, messed up instinct” within us that tends to ostracize others.
Affleck even went a step further, suggesting that people derive a kind of pleasure from witnessing others’ downfall—something he described as schadenfreude. “Perhaps it’s because there’s a part of us that feels safer by pointing fingers at others. It’s easier to feel secure when everyone’s eyes are diverted,” he commented. “When we strip forgiveness from the equation, it’s outrageous. It prevents people from owning their mistakes and moving forward. Admitting to a mistake often leads to social isolation.”
He criticized the hypocrisy surrounding the issue and implied that, deep down, most people don’t want to acknowledge that humanity encompasses both our better moments and our worst misdeeds.
Damon and Affleck’s appeal for understanding and forgiveness aligns with thoughts previously voiced by singer Nick Cave, who described the rejection of compassion as “the antithesis of mercy” back in 2020. Cave articulated that, without compassion, society risks losing its very essence, as we depend on each other’s falterings for growth. He emphasized that compassion fosters open dialogue and aids in collective discovery, ultimately benefiting everyone.
