Trump Responds to Renee Good’s Death
President Donald Trump referred to the death of Renee Good during an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as a “tragedy.” He expressed hope that her father continues to be a “die-hard Trump fan.”
“When I learned about that young woman… it was horrifying. It’s tragic. It’s terrible—everyone will agree, including ICE,” Trump stated at a press briefing on Tuesday.
The press conference coincided with the anniversary of Trump’s second inauguration, where he discussed his administration’s successes. He mentioned the January 7 shooting of Good by ICE agents in Minneapolis, asserting that federal authorities deemed their use of force justifiable, asserting Good was suspected of weaponizing her car against officers.
The shooting ignited backlash from Democrats and others, labeling it “murder” by the government and triggering protests in the Twin Cities in recent days.
Trump reiterated his acknowledgment of Good’s father as a supposed Trump supporter, hoping he retains that sentiment following his daughter’s tragic death. “When I got to know her, I believe her father was, I don’t know, a big Trump fan. He supported everything I did. And it’s a very sad situation,” he added.
Despite the outcry surrounding Good’s death, Trump has emphasized support for ICE and other law enforcement in deporting illegal immigrants. His remarks came amid ongoing protests against forced removals, where some praised the administration’s stance on deporting violent offenders.
Trump insisted, “We’re focusing on putting violent criminals behind bars. Why wouldn’t we?” He acknowledged that, yes, law enforcement might make errors, implying that ICE can sometimes be overly forceful, yet maintained the need for such actions.
Good’s father has stayed relatively quiet since her death, but her former father-in-law commented recently, attributing the incident to a series of “wrong choices” rather than casting blame on individuals involved in the shooting.
