Osi Umenyiora Shares Health Scare Experience
Osi Umenyiora, a former defensive end for the Giants, recently opened up about a serious health incident that landed him in a coma for several days, leading him to step away from his role on “Breakdown” for some time.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Umenyiora mentioned facing “real adversity” during a “really, really bad situation,” though he didn’t delve into specific medical details.
“I was hospitalized for nearly a month. I spent five days in a coma and underwent major surgery,” the former NFL star explained. “It was an incredibly tough time, and I discovered who truly cared for me. Some people visited daily. It was heartwarming to see folks, even from afar, coming to support me at my lowest moments.”
While Umenyiora co-hosts ‘The Breakdown’ on NFL UK & Ireland’s YouTube channel with fellow ex-Giants player Jason Bell, he noted that some expected supporters didn’t show up for him during this time.
Conversely, he expressed gratitude toward those who did, especially Bell.
“This guy here was by my side,” Umenyiora said about Bell. “I clearly remember waking up and seeing him. It filled me with love, and I couldn’t help but cry. So, just know this bond we have is genuine. I truly appreciate everything you’ve done for me. I was told that just hearing your voice made a difference in my recovery. It was remarkable.”
At 44, Umenyiora, who was drafted in the second round in 2003, had an 11-year career in the NFL with the Giants and Falcons.
He was part of the Giants’ Super Bowl-winning teams in 2008 and 2012 and earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors twice.
Umenyiora, originally from London, has been an NFL analyst in the UK for the past decade after retiring in 2015.
