Support for Trump's Greenland initiative encounters resistance from the majority of Americans in surveys

Trump’s Greenland Acquisition Efforts Face Public Resistance

As President Trump intensifies his attempts to acquire Greenland from Denmark, recent national surveys indicate that a majority of Americans are against the idea of occupying the large island situated between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.

During an unexpected visit to Davos, Switzerland, the president engaged in critical discussions with NATO allies about the strategic importance of Greenland.

Just before this visit, Trump asserted that there was “no turning back” regarding the efforts to occupy Greenland. When questioned at a White House press conference about the lengths he would go to secure the territory, he simply replied, “We’ll see,” also hinting at the possibility of imposing tariffs on NATO members.

Yet, this initiative is met with resistance from both Democrats and certain Republicans in Congress, and the latest polls reflect a lack of enthusiasm among the public for occupying the island.

A Quinnipiac University survey released recently revealed that an overwhelming 86% of voters across the nation opposed military action to occupy Greenland. This included 95% of Democrats, 94% of independents, and approximately 68% of Republicans.

Moreover, a CNN poll conducted around the same time also indicated that three-quarters of Americans were against such an occupation. While 94% of Democrats and 80% of independents expressed disapproval, the Republican viewpoint was divided equally.

In another poll by CBS News, only 14% of participants were in favor of using military force to take control of the island.

Furthermore, the Quinnipiac survey showed that voters opposed any efforts to purchase Greenland by a 55% to 37% margin, revealing a clear political split: the majority of Democrats and nearly 60% of independents were against the purchase, while over two-thirds of Republicans supported it.

In a social media post, Trump stated, “The United States needs Greenland for national security purposes,” claiming that any alternative to U.S. control of the island would be “unacceptable.” Nonetheless, his push for acquisition has led to notable tension with Denmark and other NATO countries.
