Lazard's CEO Peter Orszag forecasts a significant event occurring in Iran.

Lazard CEO Speculates on Imminent Action in Iran

Peter Orszag, the CEO of Lazard, voiced concerns on Wednesday about a potential significant event happening soon in Iran, coinciding with the positioning of an American aircraft carrier.

He mentioned, “It’s very likely that something will happen in Iran in the next few days,” suggesting that the United States could have been waiting for the carrier’s arrival. Speaking on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” he emphasized the seriousness of the situation.

In a broader context, Orszag pointed out that other news, like the White House’s unexpected focus on Greenland, could serve as a distraction amidst escalating tensions with Iran.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Trump indicated that Iran’s leaders “want to talk and we will talk,” after weeks of protests calling for regime change.

Trump also remarked on Tuesday that he had issued strong orders to take military action against Iran if threats against him were realized.

Orszag pondered whether the administration was contemplating a regime change in Iran or had more specific military goals, such as targeting Iran’s missile capabilities. He questioned the effectiveness of bombing campaigns aimed at regime change, noting the mixed success of such strategies in the past.

“If the goal is missile removal, that can work,” he stated, “but regime change often has seen varying results.”

When asked about Trump’s comments regarding Greenland, Orszag expressed uncertainty, admitting that while he was unsure of intentions, it could have unintended distractions.

A Lazard spokesperson supported Orszag’s insights, revealing that the firm’s analysis points to an elevated risk of military action in Iran in the near term.

At 56, Orszag leads Lazard, which holds a prestigious reputation in investment banking and asset management. His connections in Washington lend weight to his observations.

Previously, he had served in the Obama administration as the director of the Office of Management and Budget, and he has ties to CNN through his marriage to Bianna Golodriga, a senior anchor and international correspondent.

The timing of Orszag’s warnings corresponds with Iran facing its worst unrest in decades. Protests erupted on December 28 over economic hardships and escalated to calls for the government’s overthrow. The Iranian regime reacted with severe measures, deploying security forces to suppress dissent.

Human rights organizations report substantial casualties, estimating thousands of deaths among demonstrators. The US-based Human Rights Defenders News Agency confirmed over 3,000 fatalities from protests. President Trump directed the Pentagon to prepare military options following reports that Iran was planning mass executions of detainees.

The U.S. has since moved carrier strike groups into the region while keeping long-range bombers on alert, raising tensions in the Middle East. After reports indicated that Iran might halt executions, the White House adjusted its stance yet reiterated that all options remain available should violence continue.
