Mexican government officials, including the president, have openly accepted the idea of “mass immigration” as a means of advancing their vision of a “reconquista,” which refers to the reclaiming of U.S. land that historically belonged to Mexico.
This is just one of the many insights presented in a new book by best-selling author and Breitbart News senior contributor Peter Schweitzer. The Invisible Coup: How American Elites and Foreign Powers Use Immigration as a Weapon.
Both the leftist former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (often called AMLO) and his successor, current President Claudia Sheinbaum, have expressed support for the notion of a reconquista. The book indicates that Mexican Americans, particularly those undocumented in the U.S., have been actively discouraged from integrating or adopting any American identity. Officials from both administrations have championed songs that celebrate undocumented immigrants sending remittances home, labeling them as “heroes” while denouncing American identity.
Schweitzer points out in his book that the anti-American sentiment linked to harmful mass immigration policies is rooted in the attitudes of Mexico’s political elite, who seem to disdain ordinary Mexicans who wish to assimilate and shun reconquista extremism. Instead of a traditional military conflict, Schweitzer argues—backed by well-documented statements from Mexican leaders—that the government is working to undermine American sovereignty through large-scale immigration that favors loyalties to Mexico City.
“Many in Mexico’s elite support the idea of a reconquista, a ‘reclaiming’ of land ceded to the U.S. by Mexico in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, achieved through mass immigration and political maneuvers,” Schweitzer notes.
One particularly startling revelation comes from a comment made by AMLO in 2017, after failing to win the presidency twice but before succeeding in 2018. When asked about running again, he jovially said, “Third time’s a charm!”—and then pivoted to the topic of reclaiming American land.
“Do you think we Mexicans are reconquering our land again?” I asked. AMLO replied, “Yes.”
“Yes, the human rights of migrant workers especially must be respected,” he responded, indicating he never opposed the notion of “reconquering” U.S. territory.
After the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) fell from power in the 20th century, AMLO solidified the radical leftist Morena party’s influence, passing it on to Sheinbaum in 2024. Sheinbaum turned out to be just as radical as her predecessor. In Invisible Coup, Schweitzer recalls her endorsing a song titled “Immigrant Hymn,” performed at a press conference in 2024.
“And even though my birth certificate states I am American, I’m pure Mexican,” the lyrics declare. “We change places, but not the flag/I have green, white, and red running through my veins.”
“Shortly after the song’s release, Mexico’s Congressional News Agency featured an article by Mario A. Medina, explaining that the song signifies ‘an act of gratitude and recognition of what they [migrants] have done.’ I say it symbolizes the reconquest of our territory,” Schweitzer states.
As Schweitzer noted, Gabriela Rodríguez, head of the National Population Council (CONAPO), affirmed in December 2024, “We Mexicans are reclaiming territory. We won’t see a full recovery. This has been escalating for 30 years.” Another politician, Senator Félix Salgado, also declared in 2019, “Mexicans are in our territory (California, Nevada, Texas, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming). We will reclaim the land that was taken.”
