Trump Requests Investigation into Ilhan Omar for Allegedly Earning Millions While in Office

Trump Calls for Investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Wealth

This week, President Trump urged for a criminal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), questioning how her net worth reportedly grew to over $30 million while serving in office.

Trump stated, “It is legally impossible for someone to accumulate this much wealth while receiving a politician’s salary.” He went on to demand that Omar be investigated for potential financial and political crimes, insisting that such an inquiry should commence immediately.

Omar, who was born in Somalia and represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, is already under scrutiny from the House Oversight Committee regarding her and her husband Tim Mynett’s financial dealings.

Republican lawmakers are curious about how the couple’s financial situation has changed so significantly since Omar joined Congress in 2019.

A report noted that, despite earlier claims by Omar that her wealth was exaggerated, her financial profile has indeed shifted dramatically, with Mynett revealing that her company seemed to be barely functional just a few years prior.

Details emerged indicating that the winery Mynett invested in had only $650 in its bank account as of February 2024. A separate venture, Rose Lake Capital, was valued at less than $1,000 for Mynett at the end of 2023 and had merely $42.44 in its account by February 2024, based on court documents disclosed by the report.

According to further claims, Omar’s May 2025 financial disclosure revealed substantial assets tied to her husband, whom she married in 2020. These included a winery valued between $1 million and $5 million and a venture capital firm worth between $5 million and $25 million. After deducting debts like student loans, their estimated net worth is between $6 million and $30 million.

Omar previously denied allegations that she amassed significant wealth during her time in office. She described ongoing right-wing disinformation campaigns making bizarre claims about her financial status as “completely false.”

The House Oversight Committee Chairman, James Comer (R-Ky.), mentioned that the committee is seeking clarity on Omar and Mynett’s finances through congressional oversight.

One possible underlying reason for both the congressional investigation and Trump’s call for a criminal probe could be related to a large fraud scandal impacting Omar’s district, specifically concerning federal funding intended for social welfare initiatives aimed at the Somali community.

As of Friday, Omar had not yet responded to Trump’s latest remarks but seemed more focused on the Trump administration’s recent addition of around 3,000 immigration enforcement officers to Minnesota, particularly in Minneapolis.

On Thursday, she took to social media, urging her constituents to bypass work and school to attend a rally opposing immigration enforcement.
