James Cameron Discusses Move to New Zealand

Filmmaker James Cameron recently shared that his choice to relocate to New Zealand was driven, in part, by dissatisfaction with the U.S. response to the pandemic and the general skepticism toward science and vaccines.

During an episode of Graham Bensinger’s podcast, Cameron reflected on the reasons behind his permanent move to New Zealand, where he worked on the film “Avatar.” Bensinger remarked on the appeal of the U.S., prompting Cameron to acknowledge the beauty of New Zealand.

“I’m not there just to admire the scenery,” Cameron responded. “I’m there to keep my sanity.” He expressed concern over the divisiveness and chaotic environment in the U.S., particularly highlighting the public’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cameron noted New Zealand’s success in completely eliminating the virus. “They managed to get rid of it not once, but twice. When a mutated strain emerged, they faced challenges, but luckily, they had a vaccination rate nearly at 100%,” he added. In contrast, he pointed out that the U.S. had about 62% fully vaccinated, with numbers dropping.

The pandemic first emerged during former President Donald Trump’s time in office, resulting in millions of deaths globally, including over a million in the U.S.

“Do you want to live in a place where there is respect for science and a commitment to shared goals? Or do you prefer the chaos and polarization?” Cameron questioned, underscoring the critical differences he sees between the two countries. He has been vocal in criticizing Trump and his administration’s environmental policies, even calling Trump “the most narcissistic man in history since Nero.”

Recently, Cameron remarked that the thought of Trump being re-elected was “terrifying.”

In conclusion, not only does Cameron’s shift to New Zealand highlight personal choices in uncertain times, but it also reflects deeper concerns about societal values and responses to scientific challenges.
