Political Tensions Rise Over Immigration Policies in Minnesota
Stephen Miller, the Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House, has made strong accusations against the Democrats, suggesting they are aligning themselves with “terrorists.” This statement came in the wake of an incident in Minneapolis, where a Border Patrol agent fatally shot an armed American citizen during a confrontation on Saturday.
The man, aged 37 and armed with a 9mm handgun alongside two magazines, reportedly approached the officers and resisted violently, prompting the shooting. Miller asserted in a post on X that “a would-be assassin attempted to kill federal law enforcement,” emphasizing his discontent with the Democratic Party’s response.
His remarks were in reaction to Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to withdraw from Minneapolis and said funding should be cut by Congress. Miller posed the rhetorical question, “An assassin tried to kill a federal employee. This is your response?”
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, but Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed that the man had a lawful license to carry a firearm.
In a letter to Walz, Attorney General Pam Bondi criticized Minnesota for what she saw as a failure to enforce the law, describing the consequences as “heartbreaking.” She further asserted that federal immigration agencies such as ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have been left to operate independently due to Minnesota’s sanctuary policies.
Bondi expressed frustration that state officials, including Mayor Jacob Frey, have openly rejected federal immigration enforcement, with Frey urging ICE to leave Minneapolis. This was echoed by Walz, who had referred to federal immigration agents as “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo.”
Bondi’s letter noted, “The result of your state’s policies and anti-law enforcement rhetoric is a national tragedy.” She reported a staggering 1,300 percent increase in violence against ICE employees and a 3,200 percent rise in vehicular attacks against agents, urging for a restoration of law and support for ICE personnel to quell the unrest in Minnesota.
