Stephen King’s Criticism of ICE

On Friday, author Stephen King took to X to voice his criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), calling it “America’s Gestapo.”

The term Gestapo refers to the secret police of Nazi Germany, created in 1933 to enforce the regime’s laws, targeting political adversaries without due process.

With nearly 7 million followers on X, King has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration and aligns himself with progressive views. He has previously stated that future history will not favor Trump and predicted that his supporters would eventually distance themselves from him.

King, famous for works like “The Shining” and “Carrie,” did not respond to inquiries from news outlets about his comments, nor did ICE, which also did not provide immediate remarks.

Interestingly, King isn’t alone in his condemnation. Musician Bruce Springsteen shared similar sentiments during a concert in New Jersey, urging ICE to “remove” him from the venue, as part of a broader critique of the agency.

Springsteen reportedly said to the audience, “If you believe in democracy and freedom, you should oppose the heavily armed federal troops invading American cities. No one should face death for exercising their right to protest.”

Moreover, Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz echoed this sentiment, likening ICE to the Gestapo during a ceremony at the University of Minnesota Law School, stating, “Donald Trump’s modern-day Gestapo is scooping people off the streets.”

In response to the shooting of a man named Renee Nicole Good by ICE officials in Minneapolis, various celebrities have also criticized the agency. Stars like Mark Ruffalo and Ariana Grande were seen wearing pins with messages like “Be Good” and “ICE Out.” This wave of discontent culminated in protests following Good’s death during an encounter with ICE.

Good was reportedly shot when his vehicle swerved during the incident. Local leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have criticized ICE’s conduct in this case.

On the federal side, the Department of Homeland Security defended the actions of the agents involved, claiming they acted in self-defense and describing Good’s actions leading to the event as “an act of domestic terrorism.”
