U.N. Ambassador Discusses Greenland’s Strategic Importance
On a recent episode of “Fox News Sunday,” U.N. Ambassador Michael Waltz highlighted the Trump administration’s strategic interests in Greenland, citing concerns over threats from Russia and China.
Waltz remarked that President Donald Trump wasn’t going to “wait” for America’s adversaries to take aggressive action against Greenland.
He noted, “From a broader NATO perspective, look at NATO’s status at the beginning of President Trump’s first term. Fewer than seven countries were meeting minimum contributions.” Waltz further stated that now, not only are all members contributing at least the minimum, but some are doubling that to about 5 percent of GDP. He mentioned that NATO has improved significantly due to Trump’s tough love approach. However, he pushed back against the notion that there’s no immediate threat to the North Pole.
“Russia is upgrading its nuclear capabilities. They have nuclear-powered cruise missiles and are testing them to evade our radar,” he continued. “China is also expanding its nuclear arsenal. If they were to target the United States, their missiles would travel over the North Pole. President Trump isn’t going to sit idly by. What steps will he take? We need to consider logistics. Russia has about 60 icebreakers, and China is developing its own fleet. How many icebreakers does Trump plan to send to Finland?”
Waltz added, “According to Article 3 of the NATO treaty, each member is tasked with defending its own territory. While Denmark is a good ally in many respects, it overlooks Greenland when it comes to defense. It also seems to neglect the Inuit population there. To illustrate, consider the Alaska Natives who benefit from a sovereign wealth fund with over $80 billion in assets. Unfortunately, if someone were diagnosed with cancer in Greenland today, Denmark hasn’t invested sufficiently over the years. In fact, Greenlandic women faced significant issues with childbirth due to lack of support. President Trump, I believe, will do whatever it takes to safeguard Americans, especially as our allies seem to overlook these pressing threats.”
