Upcoming CBS News Staff Meeting with Bari Weiss

Bari Weiss, the newly appointed Editor-in-Chief at CBS News, is set to hold a meeting with all CBS News staff on Tuesday to discuss the organization’s direction. This meeting, confirmed by Fox News Digital, will take place in New York, with other locations like Washington, London, and Los Angeles able to join via live-stream.

Staff in New York will attend in person, while those at other bureaus can participate remotely. Employees have been encouraged to submit questions for Weiss ahead of time—which seems to be a thoughtful gesture, right? I mean, having a chance to ask questions could provide some much-needed clarity.

Weiss was appointed last October after her outlet, the Free Press, was acquired by CBS News. Although chosen by CEO David Ellison, her appointment sparked debate within the industry. Critics mention her strong opinions and limited television experience, while some argue that CBS needs new strategies to catch up with competitors like ABC and NBC.

In a notable comment, “60 Minutes” host Scott Pelley reportedly suggested that Weiss should treat her role with greater seriousness—not an easy burden, I imagine!

Right after joining CBS, Weiss quickly made waves by promoting Tony Dokoupil to anchor “CBS Evening News.” She also questioned why many public figures seem distrustful of the media, and there were discussions about delaying a segment involving the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador.

An internal memo shared by Sharyn Alfonsi, a long-term correspondent with “60 Minutes,” expressed her frustration regarding Weiss’s decision to air a story about CECOT. She claimed it was influenced more by political motives than editorial integrity. This kind of tension is, I think, not uncommon in large organizations, right?

Weiss faced criticism from various quarters, some accusing her of catering to the Trump administration. Even after raising concerns about context, she approved the segment with minor modifications.

There seems to have been quite a bit of tension surrounding this issue. Reports suggest that Weiss and Alfonsi had weeks of discussions through intermediaries before finally meeting face-to-face. Byers from Pack noted that Alfonsi appeared frustrated during their meeting, which must’ve been an awkward atmosphere.

Weiss is set to personally address her team during Tuesday’s meeting. Her time in this role has not come without critique, particularly from left-leaning outlets like CNN and the Daily Beast, which continue to spotlight her controversial decisions. The Daily Beast, for instance, labeled her new approach as “MAGA encoding”—a hefty claim.

Moreover, Weiss’s outlet has been criticized for its perceived alignment with the Trump administration. Nevertheless, she recently published a piece chastising former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for misinformation regarding a border incident.

CBS News has yet to comment on these developments.
