Sam Altman criticizes ICE in a message to OpenAI staff: 'What’s occurring … is excessive'

Sam Altman Criticizes Government Overreach in ICE Messaging

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently conveyed to his employees that it’s important to speak out against government overreach, especially regarding immigration and customs enforcement issues.

His message, shared on Slack, received a warm reception from many staff members. As reported, Altman emphasized the need to uphold values and actively engage with authorities. He mentioned, “We’re going to keep looking for ways to do the right thing, promoting our values, and addressing these issues when necessary.”

Altman expressed his love for the United States and its democratic principles, asserting that supporting the country also involves pushing back against excesses, specifically referencing the actions of ICE as “an excess.”

Interestingly, he also praised former President Donald Trump, hoping he would unite the nation during challenging times. “Trump is a strong leader,” he said. “We’re encouraged by the recent responses and hope for a transparent investigation that can help restore trust.”

Although Altman’s message didn’t specifically address the recent shooting of anti-ICE activist Alex Preti, it was issued shortly after the event, stirring discussions among employees.

He reiterated OpenAI’s commitment to its core beliefs, stating, “We’ve not shifted with trends, whether it was being excessively woke or echoing ideas around corporate masculinity. We will not make performative statements now regarding safety or politics either.” He concluded, reaffirming his dedication to doing what is right.

The White House is reportedly distancing itself from certain comments made by Homeland Security officials in relation to the Preti shooting, following a decision for Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino to leave the Minneapolis area.

Altman’s tenure at OpenAI has had its ups and downs, marked by significant resignations and various lawsuits along the way.
