Actress Molly Ringwald has labeled the Trump administration a “fascist government,” expressing concerns that those who support President Trump’s immigration policies may eventually be seen as guilty of treason or as “collaborators” when the government shifts back to a leftist control.
In a social media video, Ringwald passionately shared her viewpoint in a lengthy four-minute discussion, stating that the Trump administration represents a “fascist government,” despite the fact that true fascist regimes don’t allow free speech.
“I don’t think we should remain silent, and honestly, neither should anyone else,” the actress known for 16 Candles insisted. “Something deeply troubling is unfolding in our country. We used to be a great nation, and now we find ourselves under a fascist regime.”
“It’s not that it might become a fascist government; it already is,” she asserted. “The way ICE treats individuals is inhumane.”

She then took a moment to provide a “history lesson,” warning Trump supporters that they could be viewed as “collaborators” in the future, paralleling the situation in post-World War II France.
“Consider what transpired in France. The Nazis invaded, took control, and many cooperated, while others chose to resist,” Ringwald outlined.
She added, “Eventually, they reclaimed their nation, but those who collaborated were labeled criminals.” Citing this, she predicts a similar fate for those backing Trump’s immigration stance. “This is what will happen. Supporting the current situation is unwise,” she cautioned, indicating that continued support for the president might lead to being tagged as a collaborator.
It’s worth noting France’s post-World War II “legal purge,” which included trials for those accused of treason or collaboration with the enemy.
Those found guilty faced serious consequences, from death sentences to life imprisonment, while others received lesser penalties or lost their civil rights.
On a recent Monday, Ringwald noted sarcastically to Variety, the current political climate makes it feel unsafe to express opinions.
“I’m just voicing my thoughts. Even if it feels threatening, I can’t remain silent. I think we all have a duty to speak out,” she commented while attending the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

“It’s irrelevant whether you identify as a Democrat or a Republican,” she remarked, spreading a sense of fear. “As Americans, as participants in this democracy, we are genuinely at risk of losing everything we value.”
The actress, who is set to appear in the 2026 Sundance film Ran Amok, discussed the movie’s theme, which centers on a drama student attempting to recreate a high school shooting in a musical format.
While Ringwald expresses her fears about “speaking out,” she has made several bold statements, including calling the Republican Party the “rape party” and expressing her discontent with John Hughes’ classic films, noting that The Breakfast Club feels “very white” and out of touch with today’s reality.
Recently, she has echoed sentiments similar to actor Ethan Hawke, who has also shared worries about the current political discourse alongside his critiques of the Trump administration.
