City council member repeats old assertion that the world will shun the Olympics due to Trump

City officials in Los Angeles are expressing concerns that President Donald Trump might instigate a boycott of the 2028 Summer Olympics. Despite no current indication of such a backlash against the event, they feel a “Plan B” is necessary.

During a recent City Council meeting, President Marquise Harris-Dawson voiced his apprehensions that nations, particularly in Europe, could opt out of the Olympics due to Trump’s actions. He mentioned the recent killing of a nurse in Minneapolis and how it intensified worries about “human rights” in the U.S.

“It’s noticeable. The state of the central government makes human rights issues particularly pressing,” Harris-Dawson remarked.

He pointed out concerns raised by major nations like Germany and France, which are reportedly discussing a formal boycott of the 2026 World Cup, influenced by U.S. governmental actions elsewhere. “Our current government is fostering an environment ripe for a serious boycott,” he added.

Another council member, Monica Rodriguez, referred to the discussions around FIFA as merely a “preview” of what could happen with the Olympics. She underscored the potential for severe economic fallout, suggesting that they needed a backup plan.

While concerns ripple through city governance, LA28’s COO John Harper dismissed the idea of a boycott as unfounded, stating there is currently “no sign” that such actions would occur. He assured attendees that conversations with the International Olympic Committee are ongoing and indicated optimism for participation from all 206 countries in the event.

Rodriguez expressed worries that Trump’s involvement could lead to severe repercussions, like incidents similar to the death of activist Renee Goode.

“Given ICE’s activities, my concern is about the potential presence of a federal task force during the Olympics,” she stated. The White House has since rejected the notion of using the Olympics as a backdrop for ICE operations.

In a separate comment, Trump expressed confidence in Los Angeles’s ability to host the Olympics, suggesting military support could help ensure safety and proper management of the event.
