Yale University Introduces New Tuition-Free Policy for Students
On Tuesday, Yale University announced a significant policy change: new undergraduate students from families earning under $200,000 a year will enjoy free tuition, while those from families making less than $100,000 will have their education costs entirely waived.
President Scott Strobel expressed the university’s commitment, saying, “This strategic investment is central to our mission to educate talented students from all backgrounds. The benefits are clear as these talented students enrich Yale’s campus and continue to serve their communities after graduation.”
This updated policy goes into effect for incoming students this fall.
Previously, Yale had waived all expected expenses—including housing and meal plans—for families earning below $75,000 a year.
By raising the threshold to $100,000, the university estimates that nearly half of American households with children aged 6 to 17 could qualify for full cost coverage.
Jeremiah Quinlan, the dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid, shared enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “We are excited that Yale is making this important investment at an affordable price. With this announcement, we reiterate Yale’s commitment to ensuring that cost is never a barrier between prospective students and a Yale education.”
Yale’s move comes in response to similar initiatives by other prestigious institutions, including Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and MIT. Harvard recently announced a comparable policy, and Penn has also committed to waiving tuition for families earning less than $200,000 annually.
Currently, around 56% of Yale’s undergraduate students receive need-based financial aid, with about 1,000 students eligible to earn a degree at no cost.
Interestingly, the average financial aid grant this year exceeds the yearly tuition fee, highlighting Yale’s effort to support students in need. Kari DiFonzo, the director of undergraduate financial aid, emphasized, “Yale makes a special effort to support students who are most in financial need. In addition to providing generous financial aid, Yale University offers additional grants to help students purchase winter clothing, pursue summer experiences abroad, or respond to unforeseen financial hardships.”
It’s worth noting that the total cost of attendance at Yale now surpasses $90,000 for undergraduates.
Yale Dean Pericles Lewis remarked, “For more than 60 years, Yale has considered applicants regardless of their ability to pay and provided scholarship support to meet all of their families’ financial needs. This approach has helped us attract the most talented, ambitious, and dynamic undergraduates to Yale.”
