Ethan Horvath Joins Red Bulls New York
Goaltender Ethan Horvath has made the leap to Major League Soccer, signing with Red Bull New York, and his choice was influenced by a couple of key factors.
First, there’s the brand appeal—he mentioned that he’s not entirely certain if it will surpass the Red Bull New York experience. But beyond that, the opportunities for him and his family played a significant role in his decision.
On Thursday, the Red Bulls confirmed that Horvath, who was part of the U.S. men’s national team at the 2022 World Cup, has signed a contract that will keep him in New York until June 2027, with options to extend into the following two seasons.
At 30 years old, this marks Horvath’s inaugural season in MLS, after stints with Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday in England.
“After discussing things with [head coach Michael Bradley] and others, I realized that coming here was the best option for both my family and my football career,” he said. He also referenced several Red Bull clubs, including RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg.
“It’s more than just coming back to MLS. It’s about being part of a bigger organization and playing a role in restoring Red Bull New York to its rightful place. This opportunity aligns well with my soccer goals,” he added.
Horvath’s career has also included time at Nottingham Forest and Luton Town, where he helped the latter ascend to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season. Notably, he has logged 10 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team.
He played a pivotal role in a memorable fixture, contributing to the national team’s victory in the 2020 CONCACAF Nations League Finals against Mexico, highlighted by a crucial penalty save from Andres Guardado.
Some speculate he might be eyeing the upcoming World Cup as part of his motivation for the move. While he expressed a genuine desire to be included in the U.S. squad for the tournament in June, he stressed it wasn’t the primary reason for his transition.
“Maybe if I was 21, I would have thought differently,” he noted. “But now at 30, I’m here to craft my chapter in this league and build my legacy in MLS, looking to settle down with my family at Red Bull New York for a few years.”
With Carlos Coronel departing in free agency, Horvath is expected to step in as the starting goalkeeper. This move also means a reunion with Bradley, with whom Horvath shares a long history from their national team days. He described the reunion as “unbelievable,” commending Bradley’s passion for the sport.
“He hasn’t changed since I first met him nine or ten years ago,” Horvath remarked. “His love for the game and for us as players is palpable. I can’t wait to get started under his guidance.”
“Being around the facility, in meetings, and on the pitch, it’s clear he is still the same Michael I remember,” he said.
