Anthony Joshua Reflects on Friends’ Tragic Deaths
Anthony Joshua has opened up about the heartbreaking car crash that claimed the lives of two close friends.
In a heartfelt video shared on his YouTube channel, the two-time heavyweight boxing champion paid tribute to his “brothers,” personal trainer Latif “Ratz” Ayodele and recovery therapist Sheena Gami. They lost their lives on December 29 when their Lexus SUV collided with a truck near Lagos, Nigeria.
“The last time we spoke was in Miami. I had so many plans for 2025. I went home to see my family, and then everything changed,” he explained. “It was sudden, and there was nothing we could do. Their parents, relatives, and friends—everyone who cared—lost someone special. It’s been really tough.”
Joshua, visibly shaken, emphasized that he wouldn’t sit there detailing all his emotions. Instead, he shared that despite the public’s tendency to dissect public figures, he understands his feelings. “They’re more than friends; they were like family. We shared everything,” he recalled, his voice trembling.
Reflecting on the loss, he mentioned his childhood friend who died two weeks following a bout with Jake Paul, speaking of how, although he’s faced loss before, this felt different. “I’ve lost people, but not like this. I didn’t even realize I was a giant until I found myself walking alongside giants who were there to protect me.”
“It’s so tragic,” he continued. “But my time will come eventually; I’m not afraid. I take comfort in knowing I had them in my life.” He expressed a desire to honor what his friends aimed to achieve, though he hesitated to call it a “legacy,” stating he would focus instead on supporting their families.
What struck him the most, he noted, was the overwhelming love and gratitude he received in the aftermath of the accident. “I’m still grappling with the loss of my friends. They were well-loved, and that’s sometimes hard to take,” he admitted. “We’ve heard your messages, tweets, and prayers. It means a lot.”
Joshua got back to training earlier this month and shared a glimpse of his workout in a video posted on January 15.
