Sidney Sweeney on the “MAGA Barbie” Label
Sidney Sweeney has made it clear that she doesn’t embrace the moniker “MAGA Barbie.” Recently, she expressed her thoughts on the backlash surrounding her “Great Jeans” advertisement for American Eagle Outfitters, which some claimed appeared to glorify certain racial features.
In a Cosmopolitan interview published on Thursday, Sweeney was questioned about being labeled as such, especially after revealing that she’s been registered as a Republican since June 2024. However, she has refrained from sharing her detailed political beliefs.
“I’ve never come here to talk about politics,” Sweeney stated. “I’ve always wanted to focus on making art, so discussing this isn’t really what I’m interested in.”
She added, “I think that’s why some individuals try to manipulate the narrative and use me for their agendas. This label was given to me, and I can’t control how others interpret it.”
Sweeney emphasized that she doesn’t consider herself a “hateful” person and feels hesitant about engaging in political discussions regarding herself.
“If I say something isn’t true, people might react defensively, thinking I’m just trying to look good,” she explained. “I need to stay true to who I am, and I can’t expect everyone to like me. I know my own values.”
Regarding the American Eagle campaign, some critics went so far as to label it “Nazi propaganda.” However, Sweeney firmly stated that she is not a hateful individual and clarified, “I’m not politically inclined; I’m here to create art.”
“I’m simply an artist,” she reiterated, “that’s what I’m passionate about. It’s not a field I envisioned entering since I became an actor to share stories. I strongly oppose hate in any form. I believe in love, respect, and understanding.”
She noted that she keeps her distance from much of the online chatter about her, claiming it isn’t healthy to engage with it.
“It’s uncomfortable when others try to tell you what your beliefs are, especially when it doesn’t reflect who you are,” she remarked. “Navigating that situation has been strange and challenging because that’s just not me.”
Sweeney reflected on her previous silence regarding the American Eagle ad, admitting that it was a mistake not to speak out sooner.
“Everyone who knows me understands I strive to unite people. I’m against hate and division,” she shared with People magazine. “Although I typically don’t respond to press—whether negative or positive—I’ve realized that my silence on this issue only creates more division rather than healing it.”
Surprised by the ad’s reception, she added, “I did it because I genuinely love jeans and the brand. I don’t agree with the views of some individuals who have chosen to link themselves with the campaign. Many are placing false motives and labels on me.”
