Mother from Virginia, ex-teacher chooses private school instead of progressive curriculum

A mother from Virginia, who previously worked as a public school teacher, shared her sense of relief regarding her decision to place her children in private education instead of public schools. This reaction comes amid the introduction of a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) curriculum in Congress.

“Since 2009, we’ve witnessed a decline in the public school system,” Debra Tisler remarked. As a mother of four, she opted to enroll her youngest child in a private institution, expressing concerns that public education has become a breeding ground for “political ideologues and activists.” Tisler taught in Fairfax County Public Schools from 1997 until 2014.

She pointed out that parents in Fairfax County have long protested certain curricula that address gender identity and contain sexually explicit material in library books. “It was troubling to see developmentally inappropriate content pushed onto kids,” she noted.

This sentiment was echoed following the Democrats’ recent regain of control over the Virginia General Assembly and the governor’s office. On their first day in power, lawmakers proposed several new bills, including one aimed at embedding DEI concepts in educational settings.

Democratic Representative Sam Rasoul is advocating for HB 614, which aims to update “history and social science standards” to include perspectives from “historically marginalized communities.” According to the proposal, the objective is to provide a well-rounded and accurate education for elementary and junior high school students. This would involve incorporating materials that reflect the contributions and experiences of various groups, such as racial and ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others deemed appropriate by school boards.

Tisler shared her worries about HB 614, elaborating on why she chooses private school for her son. “These schools focus on nurturing children’s talents. It’s a space where their innate abilities are appreciated, without the need to navigate politically charged environments,” she expressed. “In that setting, he can be allowed to be a kid. There aren’t adult issues or conflicts pushing in from the outside. He can learn and grow freely,” she added.

Virginia’s new governor, Abigail Spanberger, took office on January 17, having campaigned as a moderate, indicating a shift to the left in state policies. However, it’s unclear whether she supports HB 614; her office did not respond to inquiries regarding the bill. Rasoul also did not comment on Spanberger’s stance.

Back in 2021, former Governor Ralph Northam’s administration released guidelines regarding the treatment of transgender students in public schools, mandating the use of chosen pronouns. This sparked a parental rights movement that contributed to Republican Glenn Youngkin’s upset win that year. But now, Democrats are back in power.

Tisler firmly believes that her child would thrive better in a private school setting due to the pressures teachers face in public education to adhere to specific political ideologies. “Teachers are being pressured to teach a certain political agenda. That simply should not happen in a learning environment,” she stated.

“I wanted my son to focus on developing essential skills like reading, writing, and math. That should be the priority, not all this other stuff,” she concluded.
