Ricky Gervais Critiques Celebrities’ Political Speeches at Grammys
Comedian Ricky Gervais recently took a jab at celebrities who use their Grammy acceptance speeches to voice political opinions. This comment was inspired by a memorable moment from his 2020 Golden Globes monologue, where he criticized the self-importance of Hollywood figures.
In a post on X, Gervais shared a quote from that Golden Globe speech: “If you win an award tonight, please don’t use it as a platform for political speech. You are in no position to preach anything to the people. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you have spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.” He added, “They still aren’t listening,” pointing out the disconnect.
During the recent Grammy Awards, some winners indeed chose to speak out about political issues, particularly targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Bad Bunny, set to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, emphasized immigration rights while accepting the Grammy Award for Best Musical Urban Album for “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.” “Before I say thank God, I’m quitting ICE,” he declared, asserting, “We are not savages, animals, or aliens. We are humans and we are Americans.”
He went on to call for unity, stating that “the only thing stronger than hate is love.”
Billie Eilish also made headlines with her acceptance speech, boldly declaring, “f— ICE.” She insisted that “no one should live illegally on stolen land” and urged the need to keep fighting and expressing themselves. Her comments were met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Trevor Noah, the host for this year’s Grammy Awards, also stirred the pot in his opening remarks by referencing Nicki Minaj, noting that she chose not to attend, which garnered a cheer from the crowd. He humorously impersonated Trump, adding a light-hearted twist to his commentary.
