Carjacker Arrested After Taking Elderly Man on Unwanted Ride

A man was arrested over two weeks after he allegedly crashed into a parked vehicle, taking an elderly, visually impaired man along for an unwanted journey in Long Island City.

Dominic Canin, 30, insisted to a reporter that he isn’t a “thug” despite facing multiple serious charges related to the incident.

He was taken into custody and charged with grand theft, kidnapping, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and false imprisonment, following the January 17 carjacking of a Subaru parked outside a Target in Queens.

According to reports, Canin jumped into the running car where a 72-year-old blind man with dementia was waiting for his 34-year-old son to return from shopping. Canin drove off, leaving the elderly man about three miles away in Maspeth.

“After the driver went into Target, the defendant allegedly entered the moving vehicle,” Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Brewer explained during the arraignment. “He drove off with the owner’s father still inside the car,” he added.

The elderly man came out of the experience unscathed, though his wife mentioned he was confused during the unexpected ride.

Due to the nature of the charges, which weren’t bail-eligible, Judge Srividya Papachan ordered Canin to be released under supervision.

As he left court, Canin remarked that he was “actually a good person” but didn’t specify what he meant by “conditions.”

“Honestly, I’m not what I appear to be. I’m a good person…this story caught media attention, didn’t it?” he commented.

Canin expressed, “Yes, I have symptoms. I have symptoms. I’m not a thug or anything like that.”

Protection orders were granted to both the car’s owner and the elderly passenger. Canin is set to return to court on March 30.
