Missing Woman Investigation in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – In Tucson, Arizona, officials are investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie. She was last seen at her home on Saturday night.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, the 84-year-old woman was reportedly seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. While specific details regarding her disappearance remain unclear, Sheriff Chris Nanos mentioned on Monday that “the fact is, we are committing a crime,” adding that Nancy didn’t leave home by herself.

In a statement released Monday morning on “Today,” Savannah expressed gratitude for the support from the public. “On behalf of our family, we would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. At this time, our focus remains on the safe return of our beloved mother,” she said.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her residence located near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue. According to Sheriff Nanos, her children dropped her off around 9:45 p.m.

Sunday 11 a.m.:

She did not attend church services, which prompted family members to search her home after concerns were raised by church attendees about her absence.

Sunday 12 p.m.:

The family called 911 to report her missing, as she had not been located.

Sunday afternoon/evening:

The search and rescue operation commenced, featuring helicopters, infrared cameras, and drones. Sheriff Nanos reported that evidence found at Nancy’s home raised “some concern.” He emphasized, “Guthrie is 84 years old and in poor health, so of course that’s a big concern. This is very concerning to us.” He noted that it’s unusual for the Sheriff to manage such an incident.

Monday:

During a press conference, Nanos stated that it appeared a crime had occurred and that Nancy did not leave her home voluntarily. He indicated that search operations had been paused to give rescue teams time to regroup. “We believe that there is indeed a crime scene,” he remarked. “She didn’t leave on her own. We know that.” He indicated the priority was shifting from a search mission to treating it as a potential crime scene.

Nanos also spotlighted Nancy’s limited mobility and necessity for daily medication, which is critical to her health. He expressed urgency, stating, “We have to get her back. We have to find her. And time is of the essence. She is 84 years old. She needs medicine.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.
