Jeanine Pirro Faces Backlash Over 2A Statements

Controversial Comments from U.S. Attorney on Gun Possession

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has sparked controversy following her statements on Fox News regarding firearms in Washington, D.C. During the broadcast, she asserted that anyone caught with a gun in the capital should “expect to go to jail.”

This remark came amidst criticism of the Trump administration related to the shooting of Alex Preti, an anti-ICE “observer” who had a concealed carry permit. Pirro expressed her desire to convey a “different message” to the public, emphasizing that gun laws in D.C. are stringent.

Pirro stated, “If you bring a gun into the district, mark my words, you’re going to jail. We don’t care if you have a license in another district. We don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun owner elsewhere. You bring a gun into this district, you expect to go to jail, you hope you get your gun back. That makes a big difference.” This stance certainly raised some eyebrows.

Martha McCallum, the host of The Story, responded thoughtfully, highlighting that accountability might change people’s perceptions of the consequences of illegal gun possession.

Pirro’s comments prompted backlash from various Republican figures. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pointed out that visiting D.C. should not strip Americans of their Second Amendment rights. He praised concealed carry permit holders as some of the most law-abiding citizens.

Rep. Thomas Massey from Kentucky also weighed in, noting that the District had lifted certain restrictions in 2017, which allows non-residents to obtain permits to carry a handgun in D.C.

The American Gun Owners Association and the National Rifle Association have yet to respond to inquiries about this matter.

On the following day, Pirro sought to clarify her stance. She reaffirmed her support for the Second Amendment and acknowledged the legal requirements for carrying firearms in D.C. She insisted the focus should primarily be on individuals illegally possessing guns, aiming for a safer community.

It’s important to note that Washington, D.C. does not recognize concealed carry permits from other states; however, it does grant permits to non-residents under specific conditions.

The context for these discussions also includes recent developments as President Trump declared federal control over the Metropolitan Police Department to tackle rising crime, especially following a violent incident where an individual was injured while trying to stop a robbery.
