Life Sentence for Man Who Tried to Assassinate Trump
A man convicted of attempting to kill President Donald Trump while he was playing golf in Florida has been sentenced to life in prison. Ryan Routh was sentenced on Wednesday after being found guilty of the assassination attempt, which took place on September 15, 2024.
The case, presided over by Florida Judge Eileen Cannon, was marked by chaotic moments. During the reading of the verdict, Routh’s daughter unexpectedly reacted with curses, and Routh himself made a disturbing attempt to harm himself with a pen.
Prosecutors pushed for the maximum penalty, citing Routh’s lack of remorse as a significant factor. They argued that he had not accepted responsibility for his actions, stating, “Routh is unrepentant for his crimes and has never apologized for endangering lives. His life has demonstrated an almost complete disregard for the law.”
In contrast, Routh’s lawyer, Martin Ross, called for a lighter sentence of 27 years, highlighting that Routh was nearing his 60th birthday. Ross described the proposed sentence as a “just punishment,” implying that it would allow his client the possibility of freedom later on.
During his trial last year, Routh chose to represent himself and delivered a decidedly unconventional defense. He brought up unrelated topics, including prehistoric human history and various world leaders such as Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin, which seemed to bewilder the jurors.
Judge Cannon often had to intervene to manage Routh’s erratic legal strategies throughout the proceedings. On the last day of the trial, after the jury convicted him, Routh’s daughter erupted in anger, cursing loudly in front of the courtroom. Following this, Routh attempted to stab himself with a pen as jurors left the room.
Prosecutors revealed that the plot had been in the works for weeks. Routh, a struggling roofing contractor from Hawaii, had stationed himself with an SKS assault rifle in a makeshift sniper’s nest by the Trump International West Palm Beach golf course, waiting for his opportunity as then-presidential candidate Trump played.
A Secret Service agent spotted him during the incident, resulting in gunfire as Routh fled the scene.
