Minneapolis City Council Proposes Rental Assistance Amid ICE Actions

The City Council in Minneapolis is responding to significant increases in actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) against undocumented immigrants. To address these challenges, council members are discussing plans to delay evictions and allocate $1 million in rental aid.

“ICE is like a deadly virus,” stated City Council Minority Leader Robin Wansley, a democratic socialist who authored the proposal. “Engaging with it can completely transform or even ruin lives.” In an interview, she expressed her criticism of President Donald Trump, labeling him a domestic terrorist and suggesting he lacks genuine interest in meaningful negotiations.

Wansley elaborated on her concerns about Governor Tim Walz, accusing him of being overly accommodating to Trump’s policies. She voiced disappointment with how the government has handled the situation: “Instead of providing real support, it feels like we’re getting a superficial response, like a pizza party from the boss without any true help.” People are looking for substantial assistance to make it through tough times, she believes.

Furthermore, Wansley pointed out that corporations have a role in this systemic issue, advocating for rent assistance to be part of broader business support measures. “Beyond just rental support, we need to ensure businesses can manage payroll so that employees remain in their jobs amidst fluctuating customer traffic,” she noted.

The comparison she drew between ICE and a virus underscored her perspective that Trump’s policies have devastating effects, akin to a public health crisis affecting the economy. “If people must interact with such an institution, it brings nothing but danger and disruption,” she added.

A vote on the proposal is set to occur on Thursday.
