Maryland Freedom Caucus Challenges Transgender Athlete Concerns
The Maryland Freedom Caucus, made up of Republican delegates, recently shared a post on social media featuring a sign believed to have been displayed by a Democratic colleague. This sign aimed to tackle concerns regarding transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.
The sign, according to reports, was put up on National Girls and Women’s Sports Day. It was prominently displayed in the offices of Democratic delegates Eric Ebersole and Nick Allen.
Ebersole and Allen expressed their support through a joint statement, highlighting their commitment to the LGBTQ+ Caucus and its endeavors to fight discrimination. They stated, “As proud allies, we choose to stand by the LGBTQ+ community now and always, especially at a time when some adults, particularly those in influential roles, seek to intimidate transgender youth.”
Additionally, the sign claimed that “trans women have no competitive advantage” in women’s sports. However, a study published in 2021 by the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicated that transgender women may retain advantages over biological women even after a year of hormone therapy.
The sign also included messages like “Anti-dignity policies endanger transgender youth,” “Banning transgender youth is illegal,” and “Aggressive coercion creates fear.”
Meanwhile, Fox News Digital has reached out to both Ebersole, Allen, and the Maryland LGBTQ+ Caucus for further comments regarding the situation. This discussion comes just before the Maryland General Assembly is set to vote on the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.
This proposed legislation would mandate that certain schools designate specific sports teams and locker rooms based on biological sex while also preventing backlash against schools maintaining such separations. Already, 27 states in the U.S. have similar laws banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
