Trump’s Remarks at National Prayer Breakfast
During his speech at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, President Donald Trump humorously mentioned that he doesn’t sleep on planes because he’s always on the lookout for “the enemy” and “missiles.” His comments elicited laughter from those in attendance.
The National Prayer Breakfast, held in Washington, is a bipartisan event that brings together members of Congress, business leaders, and foreign dignitaries to discuss faith and prayer for the nation. This marks the sixth occasion that Trump has participated since his first term began in 2017.
Trump has a reputation for staying awake while flying on Air Force One. His reference to being vigilant for missiles reminisces about his initial meeting with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Daniel “Raisin” Cain, discussing strategies against ISIS.
Trump shared a light-hearted moment when General Cain offered him a place to rest on a lengthy flight, which Trump declined as they were strategizing about defeating ISIS. Trump joked about initially misunderstanding Cain’s name, saying, “What the hell is that name?”
Continuing in his address, Trump praised the U.S. military’s strength during his second term, highlighting efforts like apprehending Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and attacking Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He lamented how two years prior, recruitment challenges made the military look unappealing, as others viewed his presidency skeptically.
Trump pointed out that the U.S. had been taken advantage of by other countries regarding tariffs, asserting that adjustments were being made. He spoke about how his administration aims to safeguard religious freedom, echoing sentiments from the Founding Fathers about rights being granted by God rather than the government.
