Warren Challenges Treasury Secretary Over Trump’s Fed Nominee
During a Senate Banking Committee hearing, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts engaged Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a heated discussion regarding President Donald Trump’s past remarks, which seemed to suggest he would sue potential Federal Reserve nominee Kevin Warsh if he didn’t lower interest rates.
Warren, who is the ranking member of the committee, pressed Bessent about this remark, asking if he could guarantee that Warsh would not face legal repercussions if he didn’t make the desired cuts. The exchange escalated into a shouting match.
Warren: This should be straightforward. Can you promise right now that if Warsh doesn’t lower interest rates as Trump wants, he won’t be sued or investigated?
Bessent: That’s really up to the President. Can you assure that won’t happen?
Warren: Wait, can’t you just say that he won’t face a lawsuit for not lowering the rates?
Bessent: Will you promise not to hold back?
Warren: So, there won’t be an investigation then?
At one point, Bessent mentioned that Trump had also made jokes about Warren. He said he found it funny, while Warren responded that the American people might not share the same sentiment, given the economic struggles they face.
Bessent: Mr. Warsh is highly qualified. Why not remind everyone that you supported Chairman Powell’s nomination?
Last week, President Trump nominated Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve, a move that puts him at the forefront of U.S. economic policymaking, especially concerning interest rates and inflation control.
Warsh’s nomination reaches a peak in the ongoing tensions between Trump and current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, who has been frequently criticized by the President for his decisions. Powell is currently under investigation regarding the accuracy of his testimony before Congress about the Fed’s policies.
