Boston Mayor Criticizes Federal Immigration Operations

Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu has accused federal immigration authorities of carrying out “unconstitutional” activities within the city. In a recent move, she ordered the release of surveillance and body camera footage tied to the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), aiming to hold federal officials accountable for what she described as violent acts.

During a joint news conference in Blue City on Thursday, Wu and other Massachusetts leaders condemned the federal immigration enforcement strategies initiated under the Trump administration, specifically highlighting ICE’s activities across various neighborhoods. Wu asserted, “They’re using federal agents to do what they couldn’t do with canceled grants, fake surveys, and the National Guard. If we face the same type of illegal invasions seen in other parts of the country, it will happen here too.” She indicated this issue could once again land in court.

On Thursday morning, the Democratic mayor signed an executive order directing city officials to hold federal agents accountable and ensure the protection of residents while addressing potential violence or damaging activities associated with immigration enforcement.

Wu emphasized that this order clarifies the city’s commitment to prioritizing de-escalation in federal immigration operations and maintaining public safety. “While the federal government hides behind a mask, we will be transparent,” she noted, directing local officials to release relevant footage of any violence or property damage involving federal agents, in line with state laws.

In a related development, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey recently introduced legislation that seeks to curb ICE operations in sensitive areas like courthouses and schools, highlighting the ongoing tension surrounding immigration enforcement.

Wu’s proposal also includes provisions preventing other states from sending their National Guard to Massachusetts without explicit approval from the governor and enables parents to arrange guardianship if their children should face detention or deportation.

Additionally, her order would make it clear that federal immigration agents cannot use city properties for enforcement and reinforces that places like schools and community centers should serve educational and public service purposes.

In her statement, Wu expressed that the city would investigate all crimes—including those linked to federal agents—and refer cases to prosecutors when warranted. “The rule of law applies to everyone in Boston, just as it does across the nation,” she asserted.

This move positions Boston among several cities that are openly contesting the Trump administration’s immigration policies, escalating the national debate over enforcement methods, transparency, and federal authority.
