Veteran firefighter from New Jersey passes away after falling into a frozen river while attempting an ice rescue

Tragically, a veteran firefighter lost his life on Thursday while attempting a water rescue in the frigid Delaware River, specifically in Camden, New Jersey.

The Gloucester Township Police reported that the firefighter fell through the ice at Wiggins Park Marina around 11 a.m. during an ice rescue operation.

The New Jersey Professional Firefighters Association (Pfanji) expressed its sorrow over the passing of longtime firefighter Howard Bennett.

Despite the dedicated efforts of both his fellow firefighters and the medical team at Cooper University Hospital, it was confirmed that Bennett succumbed to his injuries.

PFANJ President Matthew Caliente released a statement reflecting on the loss, saying, “Today, the city of Camden and the entire state of New Jersey lost a hero. This tragedy is a painful reminder that the dangers of this profession don’t just exist inside a burning building. Our members risk their lives every day.”

The organization mentioned they are collaborating with the local International Association of Firefighters to provide necessary support and resources to affected families and fire departments during this difficult time.

Multiple fire departments responded to the incident.

The Philadelphia Fire Department dispatched a Marine unit and a specialized rescue unit equipped for water rescues to assist in the operation.

Water temperatures in the river are reported to be around 40 degrees, as indicated by a NOAA buoy near Camden.

Initial accounts suggested that the firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital, but later updates confirmed his passing.
