Illegal immigrant Cristobal Liobardo Vasquez-Sanchez arrested for sex crimes following ICE hold

A man from El Salvador, Cristóbal Riobardo Vázquez-Sanchez, was arrested in Virginia, facing serious accusations of sexual assault. This arrest came amid federal immigration concerns that he might be deported. Vázquez-Sanchez, 25, had already amassed a troubling record, with 14 criminal charges against him just this year.

He was taken into custody on May 22, accused of sexual assault and other related offenses. Interestingly, the Department of Homeland Security had requested a detainer for him, but this request was turned down.

In response to ongoing immigration issues, Governor Abigail Spanberger of Virginia directed state agencies to stop cooperating with ICE and mandated judicial warrants for detaining individuals. Immigration experts have raised doubts about the effectiveness of these warrants.

Just days before these allegations surfaced, Vázquez-Sanchez was further impacted by Spanberger’s executive order, which introduced additional barriers for federal immigration agents attempting to operate within the state.

The alleged assault took place when Vázquez-Sanchez encountered the victim in an Arlington parking lot. Thankfully, the victim was able to escape and call for assistance; the suspect fled but was later apprehended.

Vázquez-Sanchez’s legal troubles go back a bit. In January, he was charged with violating pretrial release conditions while out on bail for another crime. Following that, he faced theft charges in February. His record includes multiple runs-ins with the law from April to May, resulting in charges that ranged from public intoxication to assaults on law enforcement officials.

Despite the string of serious charges, Vázquez-Sanchez was not held before trial and continued to return to the streets, raising questions about the system’s handling of repeat offenders.

Now, ICE is working on new charges against him. Lauren Biss, the acting DHS assistant secretary, expressed concerns about Governor Spanberger’s policies, arguing that they enable criminals to return to communities without facing adequate consequences. She highlighted the risk law enforcement faces in apprehending such offenders.

In defense of her actions, Spanberger’s office reiterated a commitment to prosecuting violent individuals, explaining that the Virginia Department of Corrections follows protocol by notifying ICE when undocumented immigrants are in state custody. They stress that local law enforcement continues to collaborate with federal agencies to ensure community safety.
