Iranian Foreign Minister Issues Warning on U.S. Military Bases

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, cautioned on Saturday that Iran would strike U.S. military bases in the region if there were an attack from U.S. forces. This warning followed his comments made on Friday, where he described recent indirect nuclear negotiations with the U.S. in Oman as a “good start,” noting that both parties agreed to continue discussions.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Araghchi stated: “If we are attacked, it’s not feasible to hit the U.S. mainland; however, we would target their bases in the region.” He emphasized, “We do not target neighboring countries. Instead, we focus on American military bases nearby. There’s a significant difference in intent.”

Last June, tensions escalated following a U.S. operation against Iran’s nuclear facilities, labeled Operation Midnight Hammer. In retaliation, Iran attacked the al-Udeid airbase in Qatar. At the time, former President Trump described Iran’s response as “very weak,” stating that while 14 missiles were launched, only one went unimpeded because it was heading in a non-threatening direction.

Araghchi expressed that the future of the recent nuclear talks hinges on decisions made by officials in both Tehran and Washington. Oman’s Foreign Ministry reported that its minister, Badr al-Busaidi, engaged separately with Araghchi and U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The Ministry emphasized the aim of fostering conditions conducive to resuming diplomatic negotiations, highlighting the commitment required from both sides to reach lasting security and stability.
